Cristina Yang – Beauty, Brains and Sass!
“Oh, screw beautiful. I’m brilliant. If you want to appease me, compliment my brain .”
What amazes me about Dr. Yang is not her Stanford and Berkeley degrees, but the confidence that stems from those accreditations. It’s one thing to be qualified, and another to be bold and outspoken because of her belief in her ideologies and skill.
While Meredith Grey is almost unfocused in her life goals, Yang displays this constant commitment to put her career as her top priority. She embodies the true characteristics of a career oriented women who is dedicated and passionate to be the best surgeon there is.She fights, quarrels and kisses ass to be kick ass at the end of the day. She puts herself not only before her romantic partners Owen and Burke but also their demands to start a family and to put her career on hold for it.
While sexual desire is inherent in human needs and behavior, she doesn’t lose sight of what’s important to her and her values as a doctor. Her brilliance is of utmost importance to her and she doesn’t let anything come in her way. She is a true example of how women are fighting a war on two fronts: external and internal. They not only have to prove their ability and capability to the outer world but also fight an internal battle of pushing all other social desires aside to put career first as to gain recognition.
We, Indian women have to also fight two wars. We have to prove to the patriarchal society that we should be educated and given opportunities to build a career. On the other hand, we also have to fight the fears we have built over the years regarding our own capabilities. She is my idol and it’s time for her to be yours.
