Hanns Seidel Foundation (HSF) in the 6th year of its association with CSR, has partnered on Water Conservation and Gender Mainstreaming projects, Safe Cities Project and Gender Sensitization of multiple stakeholders. As a next step to the Safe Cities Project, we have started the capacity building of Police Officials, with the first having taken place in Karnataka.
The 2 day training of the police officials was undertaken to:
- Build the capacity of police officials by integrating gender sensitivity as a part of their training curriculum
- Improve their understanding of gender within a human rights framework so that they perceive themselves as active agents for women’s human rights
The trainings seeks to arrive at creative solutions in the context of soft skill management (communication, outreach given the legal complexities) and optimization of limited legal resources to sensitively handle survivors and their cases.
The two day training, conducted on the 6th and 7th February, was attended by a total of over 40 Bengaluru City Police Officials. The primary aim was to work upon the theoretical aspect of social phenomena that leads to improvement in policing methodology and challenges faced while in the process. The secondary aim was to enable police officials discuss roadblocks in implementing law and order for the jurisdiction. The training was successful in tabling out the issues and building constructive dialogue around the same that would lead to renewed impetus in implementation.
Mr. Praveen Sood (IPS, Commissioner of Police, Bengaluru City) Ms. Malini Krishnamoorthy (IPS, Additional Commissioner of Police – West, Bengaluru City), Mr. K.N. Narayana Swamy (Assistant Commissioner of Police, CBS – Field), Ms. Brinda Adige (Director, Global Concerns India) and Mr. Volker Lennart Plän (Resident Representative, HSF) extended their invaluable resources, support, time and goodwill that led to the success of the two day training program.
The program was inaugurated by the Honorable Home Minister Dr. G. Parameshwara. The sessions were undertaken by technical experts on the subject matter. The spectrum of discussions covered the theoretical understanding of gender and its role in law and order, policing through stakeholder partnerships, conducting safety audits and collaborating with media for better information dissemination.
We are also gearing up for training of the Police Officials in the states of Goa, Manipur, Pondicherry and Jammu and Kashmir. We ambitiously aim to reach out to as many states as possible.
