A Visit to Jammu and Kashmir – Discussion on Women’s Reservation Bill

As part of our ongoing efforts to seek the support of people from across India, regarding the passage of the Women’s Reservation Bill, a programme was organized in the state of Jammu and Kashmir on 07.01.2018, followed by a press conference on 08.01.2017.

The programme on 07.01.2018 was held at Chawalgam Rest House in Kulgam district of Jammu and Kashmir, was attended by a large number of local people. Dr Ranjana Kumari, Director Centre for Social Research, Ms Archana Jha from CSR, MLA Shri M Y Tarigami,  Mr Bashir Assad from Lehar, local activists Suraiya, and Shabnam, among others spoke at the event in support of passage of the Bill. A huge support from the people for passage of the Bill was observed.

The Hon’ble MLA Shri MY Tarigami assured he will put this matter in the State Assembly through Privilege Motion and seek 33% seat reservation for women in State Assembly. Dr Ranjana Kumari, Director Centre for Social Research stated that it is the government’s responsibility to table the Bill in Lok Sabha, at the earliest for discussion and voting.

The press conference was held on 08.01.2018 in the conference hall of Hotel Ahdoos from 12 pm to 1 pm. Dr Ranjana Kumari addressed the media persons and urged them to highlight the issue. She told that the Bill has been pending for last 22 years ,it is high time the Bill be passed by the Parliament and State Assemblies so that more women get representation at higher level of decision making.
