Although the Internet, particularly social media platforms, are a huge opportunity for women’s empowerment, women still do not have equal access to technology, and their freedom and empowerment online is constantly challenged. Women when online face violence, harassment, bullying, and discrimination. We need more women on the Internet so they can use their voice, as we need more women in the streets. We need to ask the right questions: how many women are online and how are they using this space? And how successfully can we use the space for social messaging? The panelists highlighted the need for a roadmap and policies to respond to women’s encouraging use of Internet. The gender gap is online, these women and Facebook are responding to it.
