Two days ago, Yashraj Films launched the debut single of a new band “6 Pack Band”, on YouTube. What makes this release, and this band extremely unique is that this is India’s first transgender band.

According to the American Psychological Association, transgender is an umbrella term for persons whose gender identity, gender expression or behavior does not conform to that typically associated with the sex to which they were assigned at birth. In India, transgenders are known as hijras or eunuchs, and traditionally have held the role of singing and dancing during celebrations, as well as blessing newly weds and new born babies. The Supreme Court on April 15, 2014, recognized a third gender that is neither male nor female, stating “Recognition of transgenders as a third gender is not a social or medical issue but a human rights issue.” However, they have also been stigmatized for long, and not accorded a proper status in society. They are often ostracized, and not allowed to integrate with mainstream.

In this scenario, the formation of India’s first transgender band is a matter of great significance. Particularly because, a mainstream production house is backing them. Popular actress Anushka Sharma has provided a voiceover, and singer Sonu Nigam is also collaborating with them. The presence of these big names ensures that the video reaches the mass audience, and more number of people will be made aware of this band, and the issues surrounding the transgender community. Stereotypes will definitely be questioned, and that is one of the first steps which is required for any positive change to take place.

Issues of the transgender are relevant to each and every member of the society, and is particularly relevant to the gender movement. Thus, let us all applaud this initiative and support the cause of the transgenders!
