On 18th July 2016, the day on which the Indian Parliament begun its monsoon session; the Centre for Social Research staged a rally favoring Women’s Reservation Bill. Although the Bill has the provision for 33 percent reservation for Women in Parliament; the organizations working for women’ rights have advocated for 50 percent reservation. India has an appalling representation of women in parliament, since 1947, we have not been able to break the 10% barrier. We have seen amazing leadership examples from our panchayat’s where the reservation has been implemented.
It is an essential move for the progress of our nation. We have been working together with women organizations across the country demanding the right for women. In 2010, the bill was passed in the Rajya Sabha, sadly was not able to gain majority in Lok sabha.
Post the monsoon session, it was declared with great elation that the Reservation Bill of 33 percent has been passed by the Parliament and will soon be implemented.
We have great examples of women leaders in all Indian political parties, we hope they will support our cause and help bring a gender balance in the Indian parliament. Do join our movement on Facebook and Twitter
