The Centre for Social Research initiated the project ‘Making Cities Safer for Women’ in Madhya Pradesh. The introductory meeting with the state police authorities marked the beginning of the project in the state. The attendees were the Additional Director General of Police, Ms. Aruna Mohan Rao (IPS), Additional Director General of Police, Mr. Ashok Awasthi (IPS) and Additional Inspector General of Police, Ms. Ruchi Gupta (IPS), along with Dr Ranjana Kumari, Ms Archana Jha and Ms Priyanka Londhe from CSR. The meeting was held at Police Headquarters, Jahangirabad, Bhopal.
The idea behind the meeting was to establish coordination with law enforcement (state level) and seeking help to connect with the district law enforcement connect. The other objectives of the meeting were:
1) Seeking help for the Training Needs Assessment.
2) Invitation for the Expert Panel Consultation and participation in it.
3) Seeking research support from the police to access the police training documents.
The state level police authorities were extremely desirous of conducting the police training, and consented for police trainings in Bhopal and Gwalior.
The focus of these trainings will be understanding the gender concerns of the state and districts, with a focus on crimes against women; developing gender perspective in law enforcement,; talking about methodology (soft skills and investigation) to deal with crimes against women, understanding case study modules and real life scenarios to better arm the police officials in dealing with crimes against women, as well as establishing victim support systems.
