The ICC World T20 has just begun and it will be safe to say that life has paused for all cricket fanatics! Amidst all the fanfare surrounding the Indian team’s performance, few remember the ‘other’ Indian team which is also competing for the World Cup- the women’s cricket team. For a country where cricket is considered a religion, it is quite ironic that women’s cricket is hardly ever talked about in discussions regarding the sport. It is surprising that most of the cricket lovers of the country would not be aware that the India’s women cricket team ranks fourth in ICC’s rankings, out of ten countries. While the men’s cricket team is worshipped, and every match is followed across the nation with an unmatched fervour, women players of the same sport are living in oblivion.
Comprising of Mithali Raj (Captain), Ekta Bisht, Thirush Kamini, Harmanpreet Kaur, Rajeshwari Gayakwad, Jhulan Goswami, Veda Krishnamurthy, Smirti Mandhana, Niranjana Nagarajan, Shikha Pandey, Anuja Patil, Deepti Sharma, Poonam Yadav, Sushma Verma and Vanitha Vellaswamy, this team has already played its first match against Bangladesh and registered a solid 72 run victory.
Today, as the whole subcontinent gears up for the India-Pakistan Match in Kolkata, at the same time, there will be an India-Pakistan cricket match between the women in Delhi’s Ferozeshah Kotla stadium. An appeal to all the cricket lovers- spare a thought for the women as well. Cheer them, root for them! After all, they represent the country too!
